Dr. Nicole Hunfeld

In addition to being the Programme Lead of Together for greener healthcare, Nicole is a hospital pharmacist, Chief Sustainability Officer in the Intensive Care Unit, and chair of the national Green ICU network. At Erasmus MC, she is responsible for research and education on sustainable healthcare and is a member of the Sustainability Taskforce.

Nicole is an Associate Professor of Sustainable Healthcare in the Intensive Care Unit. Her research group focuses on making hospitals more circular, with a particular emphasis on disposable products and medicines. Working sustainably with medicines has been the central theme throughout her career, which began with her pharmacy studies in 1996. She obtained her PhD in the pharmacology of acid suppressants while simultaneously completing her hospital pharmacy training.

In 2011, Nicole joined Erasmus MC, where she combined her passion for critically ill patients in intensive care with her drive to promote the sustainable use of medicines. In addition, she has held several management positions and serves as principal investigator of three research projects on sustainable healthcare.
